Portuguese filigree: art, patience, and shine

Filigree is a goldsmithing technique that works gold and silver into very fine threads, forming lacework with a great visual lightness. In Portugal, it is a tradition with a strong presence in the north, and a prominent feature in the Sintra Bazar selection.

How filigrees are made

Goldsmiths mold armor with metal blades and fill in the gaps with very fine wires, worked into spirals and “S” shapes, which are then soldered and finished (cleaning and coloring). The result is a highly detailed lacework.
